Ah, Saguaro School. The site of so many childhood memories, both treasured and/or traumatic. Memorable faculty: Miss Franke. A teacher among teachers. Mrs Bordelieu, an outstanding 5th grade class. Mr Cragen was the coolest. "Head 'em up and moooove 'em out!" Mr Pederson was cool and creepy. Ms Tillotson was a babe and made me love art to this day. Three trips to the principal (that I recall), countless trips to the school nurse (who took your temperature no matter what), umpteen hearing tests, vision tests, field days, school dances and basketball practices. This site is fantastic! My brother sent me a picture (the one of Ms. Franks class) that has a picture of my oldest brother in it! What a hoot! All 3 of us kids attended this school and have great memories. I remember movies in the cafeteria on Saturdsay eating popcorn, field day, the candy truck outside the field (where we were not allowed to go), playing marbles in the playground, seeing who can do the best dismounts from the bars......Oh the mind starts going back. Thank you for sharing this with everyone. For those of us who are lucky enough to find out about this site, it surely is a pleasant trip into the past. Tambra Nelson (Graduated 1978)

Hey John: I just stumbled on to this site and was pleasantly surprised. It brought back a lot of memmories that I have not thought about in a long time. The names that flood back from the past are to numerous to mention. Do you keep in touch with anyone from our graduating class. I would love to know how some of them are doing. I certainly remember you and Mark Wells and Glen Eide. I heard years ago that Paul Marina had died. Thanks for the non-chemicaly induced flash backs. David Blatnik

I remember the school well even though I went for grades 1 and most of 2. My family left Arizona for NC in April 1965. I was very sad to leave my friends behind. I remember a Mrs. Landon...didn't quite like her. Where is she now? One of my friends was Bobby Knapp. Anyone know where he is today? When on a short recess break in the first grade in 1963, we would go to the fence and look across the road. All we saw was desert, shrubs, etc....not one house. My walk to school included going down an alley, walking next to a house and then under the fence at the edge of the playground! I remember seeing 6th graders and wondering if I would be as smart as they seemed. The future appeared to be hard. I graduated from high school in Raleigh, NC in 1975. Then I got my B.S. in civil engineering from N.C. State Univ. in 1980, graduated summa cum laude. I believe that the first 2 years at Sahuaro had a large impact on my education! Now, I live in La Jolla, CA. Bryan L. Court noblefirfan at yahoo dot com.

Pedersen was a piece of work. I had him for seventh grade home room and English. He would audio tape himself giving the weekly spelling test beforehand so that he could just push the play button for each class. He then would proceed to put his feet up on his desk and read Mad magazine while his students labored over the test. Whenever I need to be an insufferable SOB, I reach back 40 years and channel Pedersen. Charlie 'Chuck' Bueker, class of '70

It was so amazing that you had the picture of the class of 64. I am in there somewhere. I remember a lot of those faces and names. I lived right behind the school, and my dad drove an airplane across the park out of our back yard. My sister, Barbara was in the Fife and Drum Core, and they were on the Wallace and Ladmo show. I am trying to figure out exactly when the school was opened, because I am pretty sure that I started there in January of 1960, after traveling cross country from Ohio during Christmas break of 59.

Here are a few memories I have from the early 70's Mr.Hammond, 4th grade, telling us about the rodeo he went to every year. Mrs. Rocky, 5th grade, 'I hate the sight of blood, especially my own' was a memorable line in her introductory remarks. When I first found out I was assigned to her room, I was a bit nervous, as she was rumoured to be a pretty tough customer. As it turned out, she was, but she is still a big favorite of mine. When I would see other naughty 5th graders getting their arm twisted out of the socket by Mr. Cooper, back when it was still legal, I concluded that things could be much worse than to have to copy a dictionary page, which was the ultimate punishment metered out by Mrs. Rocky. How many rings would you guess she made over the course of her career?

I forgot to include my name in the last comment. Curt McConnell. Mrs. Rocky, hopefully you still read this website now and then, and if so, I would love to hear from you, as well as from and about the other teachers from our era.

Yay Sahuaro! I still think the strange little chant in my head whenever I spell it that way, 'S A H U A R O... SAHUARO!' I'm sure it's stuck with me forever now. Ms. Cool and Ms. McClellan are quite possibly the best teachers I ever had. I'll have to dig up my old class photos from 2nd and 3rd grade... Ms. Cool, you have a much better haircut now, I think.

What a great site! Thank you for all your efforts! I had so much fun attending Sahuaro. Both me and my brother attended. I went from 4th grade thru 8th, from 1971-76. The classes that came to mind that were a huge influence were Home Ec. with poor Mrs. Latham. We drove her completely crazy... and Band with Mrs. Rena Morton, she was the coolest, we got to play alot of popular music like stuff from Chicago, and the theme from Hogans Heroes.Good stuff. Mrs.Carpenter the choir teacher was awesome, too. Mr. Gibbons, my 7th grade homeroom was a hunk. Steve Corder played basketball everyday with us at lunch recess, so did Mr. Bob Foster. Great fun until the day Corder flattened me as I went up for a lay-up causing me to severely sprain my ankle. Did I mention Corder was a Science teacher? Lots of fun. Mr.Akers was a heart-throb Science teacher. Was young like us kids, kinda looked like Jan Michael-Vincent in his younger years. Mrs.Rock was a special friend, she was an excellent language Arts teacher, a great mentor. Mrs. Dinning was a cool coach. Oh,one more comment. The cafeteria ladies made the most awesome home-made lasagna and cinnamon rolls ever! Thank you! Sincerely, Kristi Bucklin-McNully Class of 1976!

This IS an amazing site! I attended Saguaro from 1963 and graduated in the class of 71. I remember SO much and so many of the names mentioned in the posts! Just a few days ago, me and Diane Van Deursen were wondering whatever happened Nancy Fusco. I'm still in touch with Roy Moore, Patti Moore. I recognized people like Andrea and Joyce Snedigar in the pictures, I loved being on the Saguaro Sabers Volleyball team, I played the flute in the Honor Band and regret not continuing on with it. BTW, Mr. Jorgensen's pink car was a Thunderbird, and I thought Mrs. Clark was pretty scary too! Loved seeing everyone, all the names, and all the pictures of Saguaro School! Shelly Mattison

Hello, I went to Sahuro back in the early 60's. In the 5th grade I was in Mr. Chadwicks fife and drum corp band. Lots of fun and some other great teachers like Mrs Marshal and Mrs Faux. Or was it fox. We lived at 3209 west Corrine drive. The house is probably still there. I'm long gone from Arizona. In Beijing today on buisness. Texas is now my home. but I have fond memories of westown. You have a nice web page Bernie McCready

Thanks for this site! I was in 1st-4th grades at Sahuaro, 1962-66, then moved to Palo Verde. I just Googled the school when someone asked where I was when President Kennedy was assassinated. I was in third grade. I remember they let us out early and told us to go home. There were fears of nuclear war, and no one knew what was going to happen. The previous year we had done all the drills, getting under our desk, air raid sirens, etc. during the Cuban missile crisis. I have a lot of good memories of my teachers and friends there. I'm in that Flag Day 1965 crowd -- I remember the fife and drum corps. Band teacher Mrs. Beardon got me started on the saxophone and my career in music and music education. Thanks wherever you are! And thank you for this site. Allan Chase, Boston

Joy Glover-class of 1971 - Nobody really would remember me. I was very shy. I do keep in touch with Luana Yearta and Susan Nobley. I started at Sahuaro for 7th grade. Previously, I was at Palo Verde. I liked Sahuaro so much better. Is Madelyn Marina out there anywhere?

Pederson was my 7th grade home room and for the last day of school Dave Hughes and Rod Berry and myself and I think a few others wore sunglasses with our feet up on the desk when he came in and we gave him a carton of cigarettes as a parting gift. Bill Hranek P.s. I don't know why but I was thinking of Robert Nelson and how sad that was. Hope all of you have your dreams come true.

I began first grade in room 1, Miss Matsuda and Miss Ayers. when the school first opened 1960. I graduated there. 1968. I also had Mr. Cragen for 6th grade. I remember him as a really cool guy. I had Mr. Pederson for homeroom in 7th grade and would like to know if anyone knows what his first name was. I had similar memories as everyone else here mentioned about him. I sure would like to have asked him what his problem was. Roy Moore RoyMiii at hotmail.com

Looks like I am late to the party. A lot of comments from ten plus years ago. Reading these entries really brought back memories. This is Reid Sokol, class of 1970. I remember a lot of names and would enjoy saying hello to anyone who feels the same way. My family unexpectedly moved back to my home state of Iowa just after we graduated from Sahuaro, so I missed the High School experience with people from our class. I will name a few and please forgive me if I leave you out Chuck Bueker, Russell Mead, David Morse, Brian Whitley, Kormac Alfred, Helen Mackey, David Lenz, Joey Augestine, Mark Zima, Andrea Snediger, Ron Seay, not to mention the teachers. Feel free to contact me reidiowa55 at yahoo.com Thanks again, this site made my day!

Found this site, as I over the years have met former students and hoped to locate their photo ... alas with no luck. But I am curious, as to who set this up? I went through most of elementary school, at Kachina Elementary located at 44th street and Campbell. And would love to find a resource for a similar collection of photos from that school 1957 - 1966 ... all or any of those years ...

Thank you! This site is a great tribute to many wonderful memories! Gary Brewer Attended 1st-4th grade 1971-1975. Teachers that were so great to me were Miss Harrington, Mrs. Sophomore and especially Mrs. Evans, who brought shool work to me at my home, on her own time, when I was out of school and in a body cast for 3 months due to a broken leg. She was awesome!
