Rickshaw rides, circa 1964. 18-year-old Dick Guthrie of Phoenix showed up at the mall one day in 1963 with his homemade rickshaw and offered to transport shoppers from the interior of the mall to their vehicles in the parking lot for tips. Dick made about $15 per day for his college fund and the service proved so popular that Life magazine came out to do a photo layout.

The Chris-Town Bob’s Big Boy coffee shop was the second Bob’s to appear in Phoenix and was given a prime corner location in front of the mall.
